Calcium and magnesium—the minerals associated with hard water—can form limescale in ice makers. The extent of buildup depends on the incoming water and machine conditions.

Water softeners covered by NSF/ANSI 44 reduce hardness caused by calcium and magnesium ions. These systems use cation-exchange resin regenerated with sodium or potassium chloride, replacing calcium and magnesium with sodium or potassium ions.

That exchange can create a taste tradeoff: softened water can produce salty-tasting ice. This is a taste consideration, not a universal safety or performance prohibition on softened water. Before choosing softened water for an ice maker, confirm the requirements for your specific model.

Use Water Temperature as a Secondary Performance Check

Once the water-source decision is settled, incoming-water temperature can be a secondary performance consideration. Colder incoming water can improve ice-making efficiency because the machine has less heat to remove. That does not mean using water outside the appliance’s documented inlet-temperature range.
