A plastic-like smell after months of use is not something to automatically dismiss as normal. Protect Food Based on Temperature and Time, Not Smell
A refrigerator odor does not, by itself, tell you whether food is safe. Food can appear and smell normal while still containing harmful bacteria. The important questions are whether the refrigerator stayed cold enough and how long perishables may have been above a safe temperature.

Blocked airflow, dust, or debris around cooling components can contribute to overheating and a burning smell. If your refrigerator manual permits exterior vent cleaning, keep those vents clear and use only the approved method.
Before restarting the unit:
- Position it with the clearance required by its manual.
- Make sure exterior vents are not blocked by bags, blankets, cargo, or a vehicle interior panel.
- Avoid overpacking the food compartment so air can circulate.
- Confirm that the power cable and plug are undamaged before reconnecting.
- Monitor temperature with a thermometer rather than relying only on the display or the feel of the compartment.

During the next use, pay attention to whether the smell returns as the refrigerator runs. A returning odor, reduced cooling, excess heat near the vent or power area, or unusually loud fan noise means the issue was not resolved by interior cleaning.
Make the Next Decision Based on What You Find
Clean and monitor if the smell was confined to the interior, disappears after approved cleaning, complete drying, and ventilation, and the refrigerator returns to holding 40°F (4°C) or below without heat, noise, or power concerns.
Keep it unplugged and seek service if the odor persists or returns, is strongest at the plug or vent area, or occurs with heat, damaged wiring, smoke, sparks, poor cooling, or fan problems.
An interior-only odor that is gone after cleaning and drying can usually be monitored on the next use.
